Welcome to Back 2 Basics Childcare

We want to welcome you to Back 2 Basics Childcare — a place where your whānau becomes a part of ours. At Back 2 Basics Childcare, we believe in the power of community and our children are at the heart of everything we do. We see our centre as an extended family — a hive of learning, connection, and care. Together, we return to the fundamentals of early education, providing a warm and nurturing environment where every child feels safe, valued, and free to explore the world around them.

Our Service

Back 2 Basics Childcare is a purpose-built, family-owned and operated childcare centre located in Maungatapere. Established on land belonging to the Taylor family, the centre has been designed to offer an open-plan environment that encourages fun, learning, fresh air, and natural outdoor exploration—elements we believe are essential for the healthy development of children.

The centre consists of three buildings:

  • The Main Centre opened in 2013 and includes two dedicated areas: one for children under 2 years old and another for children over 2 years old.
  • Room 2, added in 2019, specifically designed to support older children as they begin their transition to school.
  • The Resource Shed and office space, built-in 2017, houses educational resources and provides a dedicated space for staff and the community.

Back 2 Basics Childcare is an extended family where our children are at the core of our community. Our environment reflects our desire to return back to the basics of education and care, with the aim of serving as a hive, where we come together to educate, enrich, and nurture young lives. The principles of Te Whāriki ground our educational approach and emphasise reciprocal relationships, play-based learning and child-led exploration.

Guided by the principles of Te Whāriki, our approach honours the importance of play-based learning, reciprocal relationships, and child-led discovery. We are committed to fostering a space where tāmariki can grow with confidence, curiosity, and a deep sense of belonging. We are excited to partner with you on this journey — to support, inspire, and enrich the early years of your child’s life.
